An Essential Guide to Magical Herb - Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha in India is called Poison Gooseberry and Winter Cherry, and it belongs to the Solanaceae family or the Nightshade family. Ashwagandha is a combination of two different Sanskrit words, ‘Ashwa’ meaning horse and ‘Gandha’ which means smell. The combination of the two words reflects that the herb has a strong horse-like odour. Its biological species name is Withania Somnifera, and Somnifera means ‘sleep-inducing’ in Latin. Ashwagandha is known to aid in getting a good night’s sleep.

Ashwagandha’s history can be traced back to around 6,000 BC, where it finds mention in the Ayurveda, India’s well-known ancient tradition of medicine. Then, it was considered to be a powerful herb that rejuvenated the system and improved lifespan. It is commonly used in emaciation of children (when given with milk, it is the best tonic for children), debility from old age, rheumatism, vitiated conditions of Vata, leucoderma, constipation, insomnia, nervous breakdown, goitre etc. The paste formed when roots are crushed with water is applied to reduce the inflammation at the joints. It is also locally applied in carbuncles, ulcers and painful swellings. The root in combination with other drugs is prescribed for snake venom as well as in scorpion-sting. It also helps in leucorrhoea, boils, pimples, flatulent colic, worms and piles. The Nagori Ashwagandha is the supreme among all Ashwagandha varieties. The maximum benefit appears when fresh Ashwagandha powder is used.

Ashwagandha is an Ancient Medicinal Herb. It is classified as an Adaptogen, which means that it can help your body to manage stress.

Ashwagandha provides numerous benefits for Body & Brain:

Human studies have suggested that it can reduce blood sugar levels in both healthy people and those with diabetes. Ashwagandha is an effective remedy to increase the level of insulin secretion and sensitivity in the muscle cells.

The cancer-fighting properties have been seen not only with root extracts but also with leaf extracts which is a relatively underused part of the Ashwagandha plant.

Ashwagandha is best known to reduce stress and anxiety. It can help you relax & destress so that you can put your mind at ease before bedtime. Also, several controlled human studies have shown that it can reduce symptoms in people with stress and anxiety disorders.

Ashwagandha contains chemicals that might help calm the brain, reduce swelling (inflammation), lower blood pressure, & alter the immune system. Studies in humans have found that it increases the activity of natural killer cells, which are immune cells that fight infection and help you stay healthy.

Chronic stress can have widespread negative effects on the nervous system and brain. By reducing stress, ashwagandha may also enhance brain function and guard against degenerative brain disease. Research has shown that it promotes antioxidant activity that protects nerve cells from harmful free radicals.

This incredible medicinal herb is classified as an adaptogen and helps in normalising stress and anxiety. Being a potent aphrodisiac, it improves libido, treats various infertility issues and improves the reproductive health of both men and women. It also ensures better functioning of the heart and improves overall stamina and body immunity.
